Flicker

Srestha Maitra

It was only a pleasant morning,
With no sign, caution or warning!
Soft chirping of mommy bird begins the day
The migratory cranes are deciding for their way
The infant monkeys have made a blunder;
Mother lioness makes the roar like a thunder!
The deers dipping their tongues in waters,
Watching out for the tiger’s eyes is all that matters
The giant elephant parade gives a cry
Mr Woodpecker makes hole on a bark that’s dry
All things work well from light to dark,
Unless one baby bird notices the spark!
It was a matter of just a few moments,
When suddenly everyone forgot their opponents!
All started speeding without any aim,
And soon the jungle was engulfed in flame.
The lioness pushes her cubs out of the fire
When she knows her situation is still dire!
The night sky lit up, it was glowing red
Mother bird still putting her babies to bed;
What does she do? Where does she go?
Her babies can’t fly, they are yet to grow!
With tears she sings her last lullaby;
She knows its worthless even to try.
Not far away a jackal runs,
He doesn’t stop though his skin burns;
Through the crackling noises the trees talked,
When the sun rose, it seemed the jungle had walked!
And it was again a pleasant morning,
With no sign, caution or warning!
